It is always a pleasure to report when politicians do something useful for the county, not just when they screw up.
A dispute between the IRS and Ottawa County has been resolved, saving the county over a quarter of a million dollars. Congressman Bill Huizenga (R-MI) said last year he learned the IRS was misapplying multiple quarters of payroll taxes for Ottawa County during the 2022 filing year.
He said the Ottawa County Treasurer’s Office sought an appeal of the IRS action and asked him and his office to intervene. While this appeal was happening, Huizenga said the IRS continued to penalize and fine Ottawa County for $265,310. After a months long, million-dollar dispute, Huizenga said he was able to resolve the issue.
As a result, the IRS removed any additional penalties and fees that had been incorrectly applied to Ottawa County.
I am glad we were able to correct this $1,000,000 plus error by the IRS and remove more than a quarter of a million dollars in fines and fees that had been wrongly applied.
